roboman's performing career...
began at age 5 dancing in The Nutcracker Ballet in Houston, TX. Age 10, he taught himself to play the piano. At age 12, Rob and his family moved to northern Virginia where he started composing his own piano and choral music. At age 18, Rob proved his talent when he competed in front of more than 3,000 people at the Warner Theater and won the Washington Post Music & Dance Awards Scholarship. In the same year, Rob wrote and directed his own musical parody of Harry Potter, earned All-State Vocalist in Virginia, was accepted into Regional Honors Choir, and was voted Senior Representative for his high school choral leading over 350 students. He always made sure everyone in choir felt included. While all of this was happening, his dad passed away of cancer.
The next year, Rob attended The Catholic University Music School in Washington, DC where he took rigorous music theory courses, jazz and tap dance classes, and acting workshops under Jane P. Townsend. There, Rob found his unique songwriting talent and stepped into his queer identity dancing at the 18+ gay clubs every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for two years in Washington, DC. Rob fell in love for the first time and began marching on the front lines of the gay rights movement in 2009, making out with his partner on live television.
His first love cheated on him and thus his first album idea arrived. He began a writing songs about heartbreak and loss dreaming of a dance pop record writing about loss and turning it gay and glittertastic. In the same year, His musical theatre mentor, JPT died of cancer.
He decided to move to NYC at just 20 years old. NYC queer night life adopted him right away as he would party five nights a week and know all of the passwords to skip the line at the door to the most prestigious clubs in Manhattan. After his short stint in NYC, his apartment was broken into and all of his music equipment was stolen and he ran out of money. He had to start over and move back in with his family. Oddly enough, at his time back in Houston, Texas at his mother's house he had a lot of alone time working for walmart and coming home and writing music. Here, he realized something at the piano. He was trying to think of a stage name for years. "If I were to get rid of some letters in my name, I could go from Rob Moorman to .... "ROBOMAN." From them on, Rob tried to get the courage to become this version of himself. For years still would not have the courage to do so....
He took a 9-5 in Washington, DC for four years. His entry level job was not paying enough for Washington, DC rent. His performing career started to feel like it was a past life. He was building up debt. His dream album was not getting done. He felt so exhausted from his job and stopped making music completely. He would pray for answers on how he should best use his God given talents. He decided to leave his 9-5 and his friends in Washington and move back to NYC to try again.
2nd time moving back to NYC, Roboman got a job in Background work for TV and Film and was on set with Actors like Whoopi Goldberg and Emma Stone. His life started making sense. He got a job at an all gay restaurant in Hell's Kitchen serving theatre goers. He started working hours learning his electronic music software. He always dreamed of sounding like Avicii. He finally felt confident to work on his dream Album. The album he was working on since Freshmen year of college. As he was about to put out and perform an EP demo of the album he has always dreamed about, this pressure he put on himself and the pressure of his family to "succeed" triggered severe anxiety and depression. He did not end up releasing the EP and was feeling purposeless.
Shortly after, the world turned upside down. The global pandemic arrived and Rob moved alllll the way back to Houston. What a ride.
It turned out to be a blessing. Here, Rob could spend every minute watching YouTube tutorials and taking songwriting classes online where he perfected his wild dream to be Pop Sensation!
Rob knew It was time to lean into the fear and have faith that God will grant him favor. 3rd time is a charm. Rob moved back to NYC AGAIN working at a Michelin Star restaurant. He took the knowledge he learned from the passed decade in making and saving money and also balancing friendships and also working on the album of his career. Rob dyed his hair Blue and Roboman emerged. He put on his sunglasses, walked home in his bleach burned sleeveless T-shirt, in his 8 inch leather heels, and immediately got back to his tiny studio and began working to finish that F***ing album!
Roboman. He LIVES!
